History of Tinukib

In the very heart of every Ilonggo is a deeper sense of appreciation and desire that our products can be showcased and known not only in our city but beyond.

We indeed have so much to offer.  There are still many products of the Ilonggos that are waiting to be discovered.

It always puts a smile on my face when a guest or customer gets that sudden look of amazement and simply appreciates the intricacy and craftsmanship of the Ilonggo products.  This just affirms that we can do so much with the natural resources given to us if we only put our hearts into it.

Our islands are littered with micro-entrepreneurs who see “beauty in the ashes” and who unknowingly stumble in discovering that their simple hands can accomplish great things with a piece of leaf, stick or stone.  Who make use of the little that they have in order that they may be able to provide for their family.  And it is in the very core of Taytay Sa Kauswagan, Inc. (TSKI) to be able to see these micro-entrepreneurs raise their standard of living.

Thus, TSKI, a non-stock, non-profit Christian Development Organization that provides financial and non-financial services to micro-entrepreneurs, initiated the establishment of the Tinukib Pasalubong Center, to provide an avenue for these micro-entrepreneurs to display, showcase and promote their products.

TSKI has always been in the forefront in bringing innovation to the provision of microfinance.  With the vision of seeing families living a self- sufficient life, building relationships and developing communities, TSKI, with its Business Development Services (BDS), forged into creating an avenue where enterprises would be sustainable in a mainstream but vibrant market.

It began with bringing about the experience of a buy that would make a difference:  a difference in the life of both creator and customer, instilling in the mind that each purchase would uphold the entrepreneurial spirit behind the product and raise the quality of life.  These were the  beautifully hand crafted bags,  fashion accessories, lamps, home accessories made from raw materials abundant in the different islands of Western Visayas: Capiz shells, abaca fiber, pandan leaves, nito and piña, and not to be outdone were the appetizing delicacies made by the expert hands of TSKI assisted clients and Ilonggo producers.  To exhibit such quality and artistic works, Tinukib Pasalubong Center was launched for everyone to discover the culture, craft and delicacies of the Ilonggos.

Tinukib” is a Hiligaynon word which means creation:  Discovery of the different creations by the artistic hands of the Ilonggo micro-entrepreneurs.

The core of Tinukib is more than just rediscovering the rich culture of the Ilonggos and what it has to offer globally, but also the worthier cause to help communities and make a difference to the dynamic social enterprises it supports.

Each Tinukib product is made with a story from the heart.  It depicts the journey of each product from the home of its producer to the showroom, giving a glimpse into the very heart of the Ilonggo community.

As TSKI sees the importance of assisting its clientele and the producers, on December 9, 2013, it sealed its commitment to continue to be of service to the producers and to encourage entrepreneurship in the region through the establishment of the Tinukib Foundation Inc.  The foundation envisions being a leading marketing and development foundation and a main economic driver in the growth of micro and small producers in the region and beyond.  The foundation’s very heart is to provide avenues to market and promote the products that can benefit the micro-entrepreneurs.  It also aims to advance and uphold the value chain that would link different systems towards the development of enterprises.

Indeed the products of the Ilonggos are something that we can be proud of.  It is something worthy to be showcased and displayed.  It is something that we should actively support and promote, because every purchase of the product can truly make a difference in the lives of these micro-entrepreneurs.

So if you are a local of Iloilo, or a tourist, make TINUKIB your next stop. It is indeed a place worth discovering.
